The Root of Motivation
Becoming better versions of ourselves, getting healthier, and becoming more fit are usually looked upon in a positive light. However, the driving motivators may not always come from a positive place.
What motivates you?
What drives you?
What makes you want to be better both inside and outside?
Positive vs. Negative Motivators
It is important to be self-aware and to know what motivates our actions. Do our actions come from a healthy place or a place of insecurity and fear? Both positive and negative things can be equally motivating.
What many behavioral science studies on human behavior show is that positive motivators effect long-term positive change but negative motivators do not. Negative motivators prove to only be effective while the negative motivating factor is present. Once it is removed, the motivation disappears. For instance, a doctor tells a patient they are at risk for having a heart attack. So, the patient goes on a crash diet. The crash diet may be effective in the short-term to quickly loose weight, however, the weight often returns within a few months. This is because the negative motivation, fear, is gone.
Examples of negative motivators:
I’m fat.
I’m not good enough.
I’m not attractive.
Examples of Positive Motivators:
I want to get in better shape because I will feel better and be happier.
I am increasing the quality of my life.
I am worth the investment of time and resources.
Simple motivation check list
A good way to self-check where your motivation originates is to ask yourself these simple questions. Ask yourself boldly and answer with honesty:
- Why do I want to ________________?
- For what purpose would I or do I ________________?
- Would this action be a loving action or a loving choice?
- Would choosing to take this action be good for me? Would it be good for my family? Would it be good for the world?
Answering these questions will help you discover the root of your motivation and understand why you want create change in your life.
May you find motivation that is rooted in love and effects positive and permanent change in your life!
